Over the working thing already
August 25th, 2006 | by lissie |I’ve been in IT for about 10 years. It used to be that I would be a part of a team that built a system which helped the business do something better or new. These days all it seems I do is be part of team who are supposed to be buidling something for a customer but in practice spend maybe 80% of the effort ensuring that the guilty are not found out, the innocent are held responsible, the uninvolved are praised and the guilty are protected - I think those of you in this industry will know what I am saying. However must say that I get very well paid for what I do - its just I am just plain bored witless most of the time - and very disallusioned with what I am supposed to be doing anyway.
About 3 years ago we used our mortgage free house as security, bought investment property and now, thanks to our genuis, and possibly the NZ property boom we only need our properties to go up 5% a year and our equity increases the same amount as I earn as well-paid IT contractor. We have the asset side of retirement sorted - we just need to leave it alone, maintain the properties as required, and sell in the next boom (whenever that may be). Unfortunately though the property rents basically pay the interest so we are still left needing to find some more income to pay for the fabulous lifestyle we wish to pursue.
An aside - my first post-graduation job was as an geologist in outback Australia. The job paid well but had some truely wonderful persk which I have never come accross since :
- 5 weeks annual leave - nice !
- an extra 20% on top of your salary when you were on leave - after all you spend more money when you are not working !
and that was in 1984 - why has the world gone backwards since then !

Know exactly what you mean about the IT comments - in the same timescales in IT as you, and with exactly the same thoughts. Currently travelling though, but need to find some money coming in….

I think its a balancing act - I’ve had the comment from friends who have read this who said they didnt realise how pissed off I was - but I guess the better our financial position has become thanks to property investments the less I feel like selling my sout to IT!
