Boulia and its raining!
June 24th, 2007 | by lissie |We haven’t seen newspapers or the TV for a while so when the helpful lady at the caravan park said it was going to rain we weren’t entirely convinced – but it did ½ the night and the next morning – first time we’ve had to pack up in the rain actually. We did pack up as having already been to the Min Min Encounter Experience we had pretty much exhausted the town’s tourist options. And how does a town of 350 get to have a $3million audiovisual museum/display – they own the pub! The Min Min are unusual lights which are seen around and the local area for 10,000 of years and have never been explained….. Oddly the phenomena appears very similar to the UFO’s the Americans have been seeing for years – except maybe the Min Min are natural – no mention of abductions anyway! Well worth the admission fee if you happen to be passing by the way!
So off to Boulia we departed in the rain – the road is single track sealed meaning that if you meet something coming the other way you both have to get 2 wheels onto the dirt – unless the thing coming the other way is a road train and then you have get off entirely. Well the first time we passed someone we thought it looked soft – engaged 4WD and still ended up doing real sideways slide at 40km an hour. Unfortunately they have been improving the road so that there was on short section where, there was, in the words of a local “a real mongrel of a detour” - again mud – not deep but amazingly slipperly – the road was still open to 2WD vehicles but again with 4WD engaged we were all over the place!
Well it was still pouring when we got to Winton so we retreated to the pub – which was huge but pretty full – a lot of these country towns still have pubs which provide decent accommodation at a reasonable price. Took the photo later as it was quite a pretty town when the rain stopped!
