The Sea!
July 11th, 2007 | by lissie |We made it back to the sea! Actually hit the close, near enough, at Rockhampton which is 40km inland on a river. Its warmer, especially at night, and now we have got as far north as Townsville its 25C during the day. The sea is only 18C - a bit chilly for us wimps, but the outdoor swimming pool, where Dawn Fraser trained, is 23C - very nice temperature - nice price too $2.50 - a bit cheaper than home! We have now survived the school holidays but the caravan parks are still very busy - most of Victoria and 1/2 of WA and NSW appear to be up here based on the number plates! We are skipping the islands and beach time at the moment and heading north quickly albeit we have had to pause to a) wash truckie b) service truckie and c) replace truckie shocks - happening today. BTW if you wonder why you cant get in with a mechanic in NZ - they are all in Queensland - the guy in Townsville is from Dunedin, he’s the second Kiwi mechanic who has worked on the truck! We have a little Laser courtesy car and its really weird being down so low again, and having to change gear!
Have had to go shopping and buy some more cloths too - my summer wardrobe at home consists of Tshirts and singlets which I find too hot here - so now have a couple more cotton shirts - cheap - out of season sale in Rockhampton, and now a new pair of shorts (a size smaller than I have bought for years) in the new season stock in Townsville - obviously they are gearing up for summer here! WE also got a replacement for the camp bed which was suffering broken plastic bits all over - the company said we had used it a lot for 4 months but they still replaced it.
Next set of plans - head north - once we leave Cairns the internet is going to be a little few and far apart- its 1000km from Cairns to the tip of Cape York - and a similar amount coming back! Then across the Gulf Savannah region to Darwin and Kakadu.
