July 24th, 2007 | by lissie |Finally made it to TI as Thursday Island is known as locally and yes there is a Wednesday and Tuesday island and no I have no idea why! To be honest there is not a whole lot to see, its kinda”been there, ticked that one off” experience. One of the surprises of the whole area is that it so much it reminded me of Bougainville in PNG or the Solomon Islands quite different from the rest of Australia in that there really is a dominant black/island culture
So now its all south, south, south – back to Cairns via Weipa (bauxite mining town which is where the ore for the Bluff smelter comes from) for a fix of comfortable beds and shopping malls.
