Are you tired of the Xmas decorations already?

November 24th, 2007 | by lissie |

The street decorations went up in Perth about 3 weeks ago - it was barely November and we were talking Christmas already! Yes I know that the ancient Christian tradition, based on even older pre-Christian traditions, has been well and truely turned over to the retail Gods but this is getting pretty silly!

Our friends over in America do it a little different. They have Thanksgiving on the 3rd Thursday of November, which is probably a bigger days for families to get together than Christmas itself. I have never worked out how that worked out in practice - like you stop work on Wednesday - start preparing the turkey and then go back to work on Friday?? I like the Australian and New Zealand tradition of taking a week to get over it and then doing it all over again for New Year’s much better!

Anyway retail being what it is the Americans have come up with a couple of great marketing ploys: Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Black Friday is when the shops open at 5am so you can pick up a bargain on the way too work (!), Cyber Monday is when all the online retailers follow suit!

Now if you live in Australia or New Zealand it might be a bit tricky to get out to Macey’s or similar in person. However if you are planning on doing some online shopping Monday, or in fact Tuesday may be a fantastic time to check out my some on-line shopping bargains - so check out my article on Cyber Monday
