Some off-line employment options
January 27th, 2008 | by lissie |Sorry - since Christmas I have been neglecting this blog and the 2.5 people who read it! It’s very true that you don’t make money from general blogs like this on the internet!
I have been rethinking what I am doing on the internet and vaguely thinking about the European trip that we want to do - the 2 are related by that old problem $$$! I have got myself a part-time job, cleaning which pays $17-$20 / hr which is a lot more than this internet stuff has paid so far!
OK cleaning doesn’t have a big skill set but I guess even though I knew the resource boom is causing a huge skill shortage I just hadn’t realised how huge it was. I rang on the Monday and started work on the Wednesday! And no I wasn’t the only literate, English-native speaker person starting! It’s the same old story getting part-time work in “professional” fields is hard and the hours suit - sorta - 5am-8am - is a bit of a shock to the system - though at the moment its about 20C as an overnight minimum it’s not too bad getting out of bed!
At the same time though I guess I am a bit disillusioned with this on-line gig. There are online jobs available - but they are paying less than the cleaning job and want you to install webcams, and software to make sure you are working every second you bill for - no thanks! Writing pays even worse!
However I am pursuing another option too - but more on that in a day or 2! In the meanwhile we are enjoying the glorious weather - its pretty warm high 33-37C most days. The flat isn’t a/con but OK if we leave all doors/windows shut during the day. We are celebrating Australia Day this weekend and went and saw the huge, 30 minute long, firework display over the Swan River last night - very impressive! Even more impressive was being able to catch the train back with approx 100,000 people and be back home inside the hour - their crowd control was truly impressive.
